"...the truth of what one says lies in what one does." - Bernard Schlink
My classroom is designed around the idea that learning is best created by students who are actively engaged in:
My philosophy of teaching has been informed by my years working in various fields beyond education including working as a Museum Director, Curator, and Educator; as Folklorist doing fieldwork and as an Archivist; Museum Exhibition Design; Grant Writing and Historical Researcher for the Nevada Humanities Committee.
Recently my personal passion for bicycling, including design, fabrication, engineering, advocacy, culture, and style, have dovetailed into a series of Project Based Learning programs including the Academy of Arts, Careers and Technology’s, NASA Rover Program, and the School of the Future project. In addition, I teach Film Studies at AACT and contribute, lecture, and judge, at the FFX Film Festival for the school district.
I believe that problem solving and collaboration, coupled with real world technical communication skills, will prepare students for the fields they have chosen to pursue. At AACT we are in the unique position of being able to create student driven project based learning opportunities because of our career and technical education focus. In addition, the service learning component of the student’s education experience mandates the linking of community and business entities with the development of the skills needed to be successful in the world. I pride myself on being a faculty advisor for various student clubs during my tenure including film, theater, bicycle, pen pal/fountain pen, anime/manga, and book clubs.
I bookend my day job as an English teacher with family time, bicycle rides, skiing, cinema, reading, writing, and bicycle advocacy. I love all things bicycle related and am working to have Reno acknowledged as the great cycling city that it is. A nice profile about me was published in the Practical Pedal.
